First of all you can add your website in google by using this url http://www.google.com/addurl/ and then start getting more quality thematic links and keep on adding unique content in your site for regular indexing.

I have recently done a new site, and its been over 2 weeks already without being indexed in any of the engines.  How long should google normally take to index a new site ?

Build some quality backlinks to your site. Google will find your site when they visit those sites and index your site.

Did you do SEO for your site. If there is no backlinks, there will be no indexing.

The best of doing it is by building links and adding your sitemap in Google webmasters tool...This is the fastest way i have experienced till date  ;D
